India is currently suffering the world’s worst coronavirus crisis. I want to take a moment to send my message of support to all my friends and members of the IFoA who are in India and who have relatives in India. I know my words can’t take away the fear, pain and suffering in India but we want you to know you do not stand alone in this pandemic.

The ongoing battle with the Coronavirus has reminded us starkly that we are all in this together. We are one species, and none of us will be safe unless everyone is safe. What happens in India affects the whole world. We cannot be complacent about this virus or indeed any systemic uncertainty.

As we look back, sometimes we think we are doing well but fortunes can change quickly. We feel we are in the trench of disaster but with patience, courage, and preparation we can work ourselves out of the depths of despair again.

In a crisis or in a period of uncertainty, preparedness vigilance and attention are vital. So are humility, steadfastness, listening, mutual support and courage.

On behalf of everyone at the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries, our thoughts are with India.
