The history of the actuarial profession in Malaysia is an amazing one.
Along with two friends, I was the first batch of three actuaries who qualified with the Institute of Actuaries (now IFoA) in 1984 , bringing to a total of five Malaysian actuaries who had achieved fellowship status. Today, I estimate we have 600 Malaysian-born Fellows, more than 250 working in Malaysia.
When I first started investigating actuarial science there were only two nascent actuarial courses in the UK. Today, there are a proliferation of such courses across the world. There are ten universities in Malaysia alone.
So when Chern Yee Lee of the Malaysian Actuarial Societies Association (MASA) approached me to support their scholarship program Malaysian Actuarial Youth Scholarships (MAYS), I was very happy to do so. I am pleased to fund promising actuarial students to support them in their actuarial science education and fulfil their dreams of becoming an actuary.
I owe the profession a great debt and for a variety of reasons Malaysia is really a beacon for actuarial science. It is also a nice way to mark my presidential term at the IFoA. May actuaries and actuarial science in Malaysia continue to flourish in the decades to come.
