I gave a 25-minute presentation on “Navigating Crisis in the New Normal” to members of The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK). I also questioned if this new normal is really that “new” – and we must develop a sense of perspectives and new mindsets.
I touched on the new VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) environment heralded by the pandemic crisis and sources of new shocks in the last two years. I also made reference to our history, DNA and evolution in dealing with uncertainty.
I made a great play on our new values of curiosity, adaptability, and the growth mindset (innovation) in meeting the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital and the fourth industrial revolution.
And the new values of courage, imagination, and judgment in meeting new sources of uncertainties (VUCA) where the problems are no longer systematic but systemic. We need to be adopting a systems approach to many of the problems we are confronting today.
