Suee Chieh is a rare example of an authentic leader. I had the pleasure of working with him at NTUC Income. Suee Chieh never failed to walk the ground and engage his staff at all levels - from senior managers to junior officers, agents and customers. Our feedback is important to him and he took us seriously. He demonstrated inclusive leadership which is very lacking today. His ability to communicate a crystal clear vision, unite and motivate NTUC Income had made a deep impression on us. He brought us to embrace a brand new culture, work ethic and values which underpinned the success of the Orange Revolution.

Suee Chief is an outstanding and transformational leader. I witnessed the transformation of NTUC Income through his leadership. He is a man of exceptional leadership abilities, reliability and resolute in purpose. As he ultimately became the president of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, this is the crowning of his impeccable leadership and professionalism. He is honest, conscientious and highly trustworthy. He commands a lot of respect from colleagues, peers and stakeholders because of his integrity and high sense of responsibility. Wherever he has served, he has demonstrated exemplary stewardship.

I know Suee Chieh when I joined NTUC Income in 2013 and he was the Group CEO of NTUC Enterprise. He was a visionary leader who was bold and action orientated. He has an ability to create the right contexts for conversations thus helping others in their understanding of their wider social roles beyond their job function. Amongst many things, he introduced Project Athena and Design Thinking to bring forth a new strategic narrative and cultural change in the NTUC Group. The Orange Revolution, that he started when he was at NTUC Income, still permeates across Income today. Looking out for his next chapter!

I worked with Suee Chieh in the 1990s at Prudential Assurance Company Singapore. Under his leadership, we created a culture for excellence and continuous learning, and there was a relentless drive for legendary service at all levels of the company. His passion, thought leadership, coupled with ability to cut through the core issues, and his courage in speaking his mind are his hallmarks in transforming organisations - I have seen him doing this in other roles after we have left Prudential. To this day, many who had worked with him in Prudential still talk about this very special, creative and innovative era in Prudential Singapore’s history!

Suee Chieh is a great leader with foresight, focus and passion for transformation and doing the right things in the right ways. I've worked with him for around 10 years and there is always something new to learn from him. He is continuously learning and developing himself and is not just focused on developing the mind, but importantly, the body and soul as well. Above all, he has a kind heart. I have learnt much from working for Suee Chieh and although it is not easy as his standards and expectations are high, it has been a worthwhile journey!

In Singapore, he is the most intelligent and coveted senior management executive who is also an actuary. Suee Chieh’s impact on the industry over the last 25 years has been extraordinary. He has been a mentor to a number of outstanding leaders in this part of the world. I am delighted that Suee Chieh continues to contribute to the profession and the industry with such gusto and passion. The profession’s future is bright.

Suee Chieh is decisive yet flexible, big picture yet details. And, most importantly, he understands the value of visual, verbal, textual, emotional and experiential storytelling. I should add that he also enthusiastically immersed himself in projects that needed his physical presence.

I joined Suee Chieh’s team at NTUC Income in 1989. What I like about him is the spirit of meritocracy which he brings to the team, always fair and giving guidance, praise or advice as the situation require. He was often bold in taking the necessary difficult decisions, generous in many ways especially in recognising good work. I am glad to have the opportunity to work with, and learn from Suee Chieh.

I’ve been tremendously impressed with his ability to transform organisations which he leads. He is a strategic thinker and is highly systems-driven. During this tenure at NTUC Income, he transformed our insurance business from a traditional, sleepy organisation into a highly dynamic, market and customer-centric one. His strategic transformational ability has been legendary, and till today has been much talked about. I’ve enjoyed working with him and admired his single-mindedness in driving change in our complex business environment.

Suee Chieh is probably the most determined person I know. Once he signs up for a mission, he will marshal the whole of his being and the organisation to see through the endeavour. He is very knowledgeable, always insightful, deeply cerebral, and able to connect the dots across multiple disciplines (actuarial science, business, management, philosophy, psychology, organization behaviour), to apply to practical and effective solutions in real-life execution. Suee Chieh is a master in transforming organizations - Gauging the timing, context, and people, before calibrating the actions and interventions. You know when you see a master at work.

I greatly enjoyed working with Suee Chieh on the Council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Suee Chieh has the ability to cut to the core of issues and identify viable options for the resolution of strategic challenges. His leadership skills are valuable in organisational turnaround situations.

Suee Chieh has been an amazing leader and individual. Whatever corporate or personal endeavours Suee Chieh has engaged with, he has brought new thinking and innovative approaches. Outside of leadership at work, he has always been a mentor to a lot of people, always willing to be open to give insights when needed or just to hear young minds speak, and he gives his time to people when they need it.
